Three Years of Industry Progress with RBC iShares

In this video, Helen Hayes, Head of iShares Canada and Doug Coulter, President of RBC Global Asset Management reflect on three years of the RBC iShares alliance and discuss how they believe sustainable and fixed income ETFs will drive continued growth in the industry.

Over the last few years, we've seen a rapid acceleration in the adoption of ETFs by Canadian advisors and investors as they have become an essential building block for portfolio construction.

In 2021 we saw record ETF sales with inflows totaling over $53 billion representing a year over year increase of 27% from 2020 across the industry.

RBC iShares has experienced tremendous success since its launch three years ago, mainly due to the exceptional efforts from the teams at RBC Global Asset Management and BlackRock Canada to bring together two leading global asset managers.

We are extremely proud of what we've built for advisors. We've built our business to meet their needs for providing them with unparalleled level of service and support to help them build the best portfolios they can for their clients. And this is one of the main reasons we've experienced such strong success to date.

Going forward a couple key areas of focus within our solution set are:

  • Sustainability: This is clearly top of mind for advisors in meeting the sustainable investment objective of their clients of which there are many, we have demonstrated expertise in sustainable investment in ESG and are committed to using this expertise to enable our clients to incorporate sustainability into their portfolios.

    • We see this as a long term transformation and continue to develop new solutions to help meet this growing client need. The RBC iShares ESG Lineup consists of 20 ETFs Spanning both equities and fixed income with most of the ETFs launching less than three years ago. The product segment has grown quickly doubling in AUM in 2021 with over $1 billion in assets.

    • Supporting advisors and their clients to navigate the transition to a more sustainable future is top of mind for BlackRock and RBC Global Asset Management. It's our role in the global transition underway to support clients and navigating sustainability related impacts to their portfolios as related issues impacting our everyday lives are already taking place. From catastrophic weather events to social inequality.

  • Fixed income: As the fixed income market evolves, we expect the adoption of fixed income ETFs to evolve as well. Currently based on the size of the global fixed income market ETFs represent a very small percentage of the assets under management and due to the benefits of fixed income ETFs, which include transparency, liquidity, and cost competitiveness, we see this as an area of growth and are focused on developing new solutions to meet this growing client demand.
