Growth Trajectory of Canadian ETF Industry

In this video, Helen Hayes, Head of iShares Canada and Doug Coulter, President RBC Global Asset Management discuss the growth trajectory for ETFs in the coming years and how ETFs are systematically making investing more convenient and accessible for everyone.

The growth of exchange traded funds (ETFs) has been a story of systematically making investing more convenient and accessible for everyone

Clients are spending less time on buying individual products and more time on working on their overall portfolio

Everything we offer clients is in the context of the whole portfolio - from individual building blocks to fully customized solutions.

We think of the whole portfolio like a puzzle our clients are trying to assemble and our job is to make it as simple and easy to solve as possible.

And when we take that whole portfolio view, ETFs are an essential building block

ETFs have seen tremendous adoption – over USD $1.2 trillion in global inflows in 2021, almost double the same period as last year. ETFs are an investment tool that is gaining traction with new and existing investors who want exposure to markets and themes and want to save for their future.

ETFs account for only 3% of total market stocks and bonds. There are still decades of growth ahead for ETFs. We expect that by 2025, ETFs will be USD $15 trillion globally.

The ETF industry in Canada is still in its early days.

I don’t see a future where ETFs don’t play an important role in helping clients achieve their investing goals.

To help advisors increase adoption of ETFs, and to help their clients meet their goals, RBC iShares is laser focused on doing three things well:

  • Enhancing and evolving our lineup of solutions.

  • Creating the tools and resources advisors need to increase adoption of ETFs in their practice.

  • Continuing to refine our advisor support model and educational resources based on the needs of Canadian financial advisors.

If these three things can be done well, we only see upside in the ETF industry.
